Microsoft Office is the most popular suite of productivity applications in the world, and it runs on Mac computers just as well as it does on Windows machines. The question on many Mac users’ lips seems to be, “Should I pay for Microsoft Office Mac Setup use one of its many free alternatives?” In this article, we attempt to answer this question and give you all the information you need to download, install, and start using Microsoft Office for Mac if you decide that it’s a good choice for you.

Office 2019 is now available as a one-time purchase for commercial users. Office 2019 is available for both Windows and macOS, and includes classic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

To use Office for Mac in your organization, it needs to be activated. How you activate Office for Mac depends on whether your organization has an Office 365 Setup plan or has a volume license agreement. But in both cases your users won’t have to enter any product keys.

Microsoft Office was first released in 1990 for Windows 95. The first Mac version, called Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, wasn’t released until, you’ve guessed it, 1998. It was re-engineered by Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit and introduced the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser and Outlook Express. It also included Microsoft PowerPoint 98, Microsoft Word 98, and Microsoft Excel 98.

Today, there’s very little difference between Microsoft Office Mac Setup and Microsoft Office for Windows. Since the version 15.25, Microsoft Office Mac Setup has become exclusively a 64-bit application, breaking compatibility with old Mac computers with 32-bit processors.

The latest version of Microsoft Office Mac Setup, Microsoft Office Setup 2019, features the flat design and tabbed user interface that were introduced in Microsoft Office Setup 2013. It includes Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Skype.

Word: a word processor with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities.

Excel: a spreadsheet with calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications.

Outlook: a personal information manager with email capabilities, task manager, contact manager, note taking, and journal.

PowerPoint: a presentation program that has come to be very widely used in many other communication situations.

OneNote: a free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration program capable of gathering users’ notes, drawings, screen clippings, and audio commentaries.

OneDrive: a cloud file hosting service that allows users to store files as well as other personal data in the cloud.

Skype: a telecommunications application software that provides video chat and voice calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices, the Xbox One console, and smartwatches.

Microsoft Office for Mac , sometimes referred to simply as MS Office for Mac 2016, is made available in several editions, each aimed at a different market.

Home & Student: this retail suite includes the core applications only.

Home & Business: This retail suite includes the core applications and Outlook.

Standard : This suite, only available through volume licensing channels, includes the core applications and Outlook.

Microsoft Office Mac Setup 2016 is also available as part of the Office 365 for Mac subscription services, which use a software as a service model and are intended for home and business users alike.

How to Download Microsoft Office Mac Setup ?

To download Microsoft Office Mac Setup, go to and sign in with the account associated with your version of Office. Go to the Office home page and select Install Office → Install.

How to Install Microsoft Office Mac Setup ?

An installer file will be downloaded to your computer. Launch it and follow the instructions. When you see the phrase, “You’re all set! Office is installed now,” your install is finished.
The first time you launch Microsoft Office for Mac, you will be prompted to activate your installation. Simply follow the activation wizard prompts to complete the activation process.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Office on Mac?

To uninstall Microsoft Office on Mac, open Finder and navigate to Applications. Press the Command key and click to select all of the Office 2016 for Mac applications. Keep holding the Command key and click an application you selected and click Move to Trash.

To remove leftover files:

  1. Open Finder and press the Command key + Shift + H.
  2. On the Finder menu at the top, click View → as List, and then click View → Show View Options.
  3. In the View Options dialog box, select Show Library Folder and save. Return back to Finder and navigate to Library → Containers.

MAC Download and Installation Instructions for Office 2019

With Office 2019 products for Mac, you can’t download the Office installation files directly from the VLSC. Instead, you’ll download an activation tool called the Volume License (VL) Serializer from the VLSC and then separately download the Office installation files from Microsoft through the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN).
The instructions for performing all these steps are provided in the VLSC under the Downloads and Keys tab for each Office 2019 product for Mac. We’re including those same instructions here with more details for organizations that need more assistance.

Step 1 : Register at the VLSC and Accept Your Software Agreement
If you haven’t already, register at the VLSC and accept your software license agreement for the Office 2019 products you requested by completing only steps one and two in our VLSC quick-start guide.

Step 2 : Download and Install the Volume License Serializer

  • Sign in to the VLSC.
  • Select the Downloads and Keys tab.
  • Find your Office 2019 for Mac product in the list and click its Download link.
  • Click the Continue button at the bottom of the window.
  • Click the download icon (circle with a downward arrow) to download the Volume License Serializer .iso file.
  • Once the download is complete, open the .iso file to extract the Volume License Serializer package file.
  • Run the Volume License Serializer package file on each computer that you’ll be installing a volume licensed Office 2019 for Mac product on.

If you requested more than one kind of Office 2019 for Mac product, you’ll repeat this process for each product.
We suggest running the Volume License Serializer before you install your Office 2019 for Mac products in the next step, but you can also run the serializer afterward if you prefer.

Step 3 : Download and Install Your Products

The download links to obtain your Office 2019 for Mac products from the Office CDN should be included in the text instructions that appear when you click the Download link for each product in the VLSC.

However, you can also find the download links for the Office 2019 suite and individual applications directly from Microsoft.

Activate Office 365 Setup versions of Office Mac Setup

  1. If your organization has an Office 365 Setup plan, make sure you assign each user a license for Office before you deploy Office Mac Setup to your users. If you don’t assign a user a license, you can still deploy Office for Mac to that user, but the user won’t be able to activate and use Office.
  2. For Office 365 Setup customers, Office Mac Setup activates by contacting the Office Licensing Service on the internet. The Office Licensing Service keeps track of which users are licensed and how many computers they’ve installed Office on.
  3. After you deploy Office Mac Setup, your users are prompted to activate Office the first time they use it. Make sure users are connected to the internet when they activate Office.
  4. On the Sign in to Activate Office screen, users should select Sign In, and then enter their email address and password. After they sign in, users may see an alert asking for permission to access the Microsoft identity stored in their keychain. They should select Allow or Always Allow to continue.
  5. While you can deploy Office Mac Setup for your users, your users need to sign in and activate Office Mac Setup for themselves. That’s to ensure that the Office Licensing Service properly associates Office for Mac with the correct licensed user.
  6. A program on the Mac, the Office 365 Setup V2 daemon, runs once a day to check the user’s subscription status. The computer must be connected to the internet to contact the Office Licensing Service. If the computer can’t contact the Office Licensing Service after nine days, the user sees a warning message when working in an app.
  7. If the computer can’t contact the Office Licensing Service after 30 days, Office goes into reduced functionality mode. This means that the user can open, view, and print existing documents in an Office app, but can’t create or edit documents. The user also sees a message in the app that most features aren’t available. After the user connects to the internet and the subscription status is verified, all the features of Office are available again.
  8. For each user that you’ve assigned a license to in Office 365, you can deploy and activate Office for Mac on up to five Macs for the user. If you need to provide Office for Mac on a sixth computer for a user, you need to deactivate an existing installation first. Deactivating an installation doesn’t remove Office for Mac from the computer. Instead, the installation goes into reduced functionality mode.
  9. Users can sign into the Office 365 Setup portal to deactivate an existing installation by going to My account > Install status > Manage installs. Or, you can deactivate an installation as an Office 365 administrator. Sign into the Office 365 portal, go to the admin center, and then go to Users > Active Users. Select the user, and then choose Edit for the Office installs property of the user.

Using a Microsoft Account

  1. Open Start Image titled Windowsstart.png
    It’s the button with the Windows logo in the lower-left corner of the taskbar.
  2. Click an Office product. Click a product such as Word or Excel to launch the program.
    If you don’t have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can download it online.
  3. Click Activate. It’s below the icon with an image of a key.
  4. Click Sign In. It’s the in the “Activate” option.
  5. Sign in with your Microsoft account. Type the email address and password associated with your Microsoft account.
  6. Follow the prompts and click Next. This will complete the activation.
    If you have exceeded the number of installs you are allowed with your subscription, you may need to deactivate an installation on another computer.

Using a Product Key on an Office App

  1. Click an Office product. Click a product such as Word or Excel to launch the program.
    If you own a product key but don’t have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you’ll have to use the Office website.
  2. Click Activate. It’s below the icon with an image of a key.
  3. Click Enter Product Key. It’s in the “Activate” option.
  4. Type the product key and click Continue. Type the 25-digit product key without the dashes.
  5. Click Redeem Online. It’s in the box labeled “Add this key to an account”.
  6. Click Sign In or Create a new account. If you already have a Microsoft account, sign in with email address and password associated with your Microsoft account.If you don’t have a Microsoft account, click “Create a new account” and follow the prompts to create a new account.
  7. Click Finish Activation.Your activation is now complete and the product key is tied to your Microsoft account.

Using a Product Key on the Office Website

  1. Go to in a web browser. This website will let you activate and download Microsoft Office.
  2. Click Sign In. It’s the red button under the first step.
    If you don’t have a Microsoft account, click “Create a new account”. You will need to provide an email address and create a password for a new Microsoft account. You will also need to provide your first and last name.
  3. Sign in to Microsoft and click Next. Use the email address and password associated with your Microsoft account.
  4. Type the 25-digit product key in the spaces. The product key is printed on a card that came with Microsoft Office or it is sometimes on the receipt.
  5. Select your country or region and language and click Next. Use the drop-down below where you enter the product key to select your language, and country or region. Click next when you are finished.
  6. Check Automatic Renewal and click Next. Use the switch to turn automatic renewal on or off. By default automatic renewal is turned on.
  7. Fill out your credit card information and click Next. If you are using automatic renewal, you will need to fill out the form with your credit card information. Your credit card will automatically be charged when your activation period is over and Microsoft Office needs to renew.
  8. Click Next. You will be taken to your Microsoft Account web page where you can download Microsoft Office.
  9. Click Install. It’s below the first box that tells you how many installs you can use. This will take you to a page with the install information.
  10. Click Install. It’s across from the install information. This will download a Microsoft Office setup file. Use the setup file to Install Microsoft Office Mac Setup.
